LayoutSwitch --
for ACT! versions 5 and 6
LAYOUTSWITCH allows you to associate a layout with
a type of contact or group, so that this layout is automatically selected
when the contact is displayed. With LayoutSwitch there is no need
to create separate databases for separate types of contacts. You can keep
all of your contacts in one database and use different layouts for different
types of contacts.
With LAYOUTSWITCH you can:
- associate different layouts with different types of contacts
- associate different layouts with different types of groups
- have the layouts updated automatically depending on the type of contact
or group displayed.

Why would you want a different layout for a different type of contact?
For instance, instead of creating 2 databases, one for your customers
and one for your suppliers, which would both have very specific fields,
you could create one database and create a customer layout and a supplier
layout. Each layout could display the same fields with different labels
or different fields. With LayoutSwitch, you would automatically see your
customers with the Customer layout and your Suppliers with your Supplier
layout.
Another example would be that you have different types of customers each
requiring different sets of fields to describe. You may organize them
under different tabs but only a limited number of tabs can be displayed
on the screen. With LayoutSwitch you would not have to scroll to the correct
tab. Each type of customers could have its own layout in which only the
proper tabs would be displayed.
So easy to use
The setup is simple. You need to choose which field will serve as a reference.
Usually it will be the ID/Status field but any field with a dropdown list
could be used. You pick this field in the dropdown list of field available.

Automatically LayoutSwitch will display the possible values for this
field (ie. the dropdown list items). All you have to do is click in the
right column to display a dropdown with the layouts installed on your
computer. Simply pick the layout you want associated with this type of
contact. Typically you would have a layout named "Customer"
for your customers, a layout named "Vendor" for your vendors.
Repeat with all values of your dropdown list.

What is this "If no layout assigned" value on top of the list?
It is a catch-all for when no layout is associated to a field value.
You may choose to not associate a value with a layout but then it is recommended
to associate a layout with this "If no layout assigned" value.
If no layout is associated with the value "Investor" for instance
and the current contact is an investor, LayoutSwitch will use the layout
associated with "If no layout assigned". If none is associated
with "If no layout assigned", LayoutSwitch will keep the current
layout which can be anything depending on the previous contact displayed!
That's why it is recommended although not mandatory to either associate
a layout with each value and/or associate a layout with this catch-all
value.
Does LayoutSwitch work with both the Contact and Group layouts?
Yes. To set up LayoutSwitch for both screens, start LayoutSwitch in both
windows. If LayoutSwitch is started from the Contact window, it will display
the Contact fields and layouts. If started from the Group window, it will
display the group fields and layouts.
Can I use LayoutSwitch will multiple databases?
Absolutely. Each database may have its own settings.
Can I add an icon to my toolbars?
Sure. Simply go to the Options | Integrate with ACT! screen and follow
the instructions.
What is the difference between DBSwitch and LayoutSwitch?
DBSwitch allows to associate one layout with one database so that the
proper layout is used every time you open a new database with DBSwitch.
LayoutSwitch associates layouts to different contact or group types. DBSwitch
is solely for multi-database users. LayoutSwitch is for both simple database
users and multi-database users.
